A joint operation between the Consumer Protection and Australia Post intercepting scam letters bound for WA mail boxes has continued in Perth since 2014. Hundreds of thousands of fraudulent letters have been intercepted during this time and periodical shredding has securely destroyed the unsolicited mail.
In January 2017, Consumer Protection invited Channel 7, 9, 10 and the ABC to a media conference held at CTI Shredding & Recycling processing plant to warn the public of the tactics used by these scammers. Dubious health products, clairvoyant predictions, and non-existent prizes and lotteries were some of the promises in these letters.
Commerce Minister Mr Michael Mischin was interviewed regarding the most recent haul of scam mail and warned that ‘if the offer seems too good to be true it is too good to be true’.
